Classic Blue: Fun Ways to Use the Pantone Color of the Year in Your Makeup

Blue probably isn’t the first color that comes to mind when you think of makeup. It’s a bit more high fashion or costume than day-to-day. However, there are fun ways you can incorporate shades of blue into your everyday look.

But why classic blue? Classic blue is the 2020 Pantone Color of the Year, meaning that it influences “product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design,” according to Pantone

This shade of blue in particular is described as peaceful and tranquil. It’s a deep blue with a hint of indigo, and Time describes it as resembling the sky at dusk. While it may be hard to find the exact shade, implementing hints of various shades of blue into your makeup look is a fun way to make a subtle nod to the Pantone Color of the Year.

  1. Blue Eyeshadow

Probably the most obvious way, eyeshadow comes in just about every color of the rainbow. Keep it simple with a single shade swiped across your entire lid. Try this shimmery blue moon shadow as a staple for your collection. If you want to make it a little fancier, add a couple other shades of blue and create a blue smokey eye. A lighter shade like this sea mist blue is a good one to add to your smokey look.

  1. Blue Lipstick

It’s time to be bold! A blue lipstick will make a statement. A rich, strong blue color tends to look better on darker skin tones, but anyone can try it! If you want a more subtle blue lip, a gloss with a bit of blue shimmer is a gentler introduction to this bold look. Try using a clear or barely tinted gloss (try this gloss in magic rose) and add the tiniest bit of blue eye shadow to give it a shimmery blue tint.

  1. Blue Eyeliner

Did you know that blue is the recommended eyeliner color for people with brown eyes? That’s right — it’s time to put the black eyeliner down. According to The Trendspotter, a midnight blue eyeliner will make your brown eyes appear lighter and brighter. By using a rich blue eyeliner, lighter brown and gold flecks within your natural eye color will pop. If using blue eyeliner sounds intimidating, try only using it on your waterline at first and then moving onto a bold blue cat eye one you’re comfortable with the more subtle style.
